The latest additions to the 4xblu online store are ready for their close-up. Today’s group consists of Michael Mann’s “Ali,” Gregg Araki’s “Smiley Face,” and Anthony Mann’s “The Fall of the Roman Empire.” It was the second sword and sandal epic that Mann made for producer Samuel Bronston, the first being “El Cid” (Mann first made his name cranking out no-budget noirs like “T-Men” and “Raw Deal” during the late 40s before helming a string of 50s westerns, many starring Jimmy Stewart). In an effort to reduce costs, Bronston’s epics (even “55 Days at Peking”) were shot in Spain, but any such savings were torpedoed by unbridled spending and staggering levels of graft by many involved in the productions. Though the box office failure of “The Fall of the Roman Empire” sank Bronston’s production company, the film’s reputation would be rehabilitated over the years.
