A pair of restocks arrived from the UK’s Masters of Cinema today: Carl Th. Dreyer’s “The Passion of Joan of Arc” and Johnnie To’s “Mad Detective.” One of MoC’s earliest Blu-ray releases — it’s spine #2 in a collection that, as of this writing, is closing in on 150 titles — it’s also one of only a handful of Masters of Cinema releases that’s Region A compatible (despite more than half of the series’ first 10 titles being region free, the overwhelming majority of the titles since released by MoC have been Region B locked). Often called England’s equivalent to the Criterion Collection, MoC’s multitude of terrific releases has likely been as responsible for the sale of region free Blu-ray players in America as any other label outside the U.S.
