New Additions: 9/30/16

For this latest round of online store additions, the titles included are one of today’s French titles (Abel Gance’s “Paradise Lost”), one of yesterday’s Danish titles (Sam Raimi’s “The Gift”), and one of the Spanish titles from the 28th (“The Day of the Beast” by Alex de la Iglesias).

It certainly seems like a good time to be a fan of Gance’s — not only is his silent epic “Napoleon” scheduled for a BFI release on November 21st, but the 1938 remake of his 2nd most famous film, 1919’s “J’Accuse,” is slated for a domestic release from Olive Films, also in November (alas, the only version of the original “J’Accuse” remains the non-English friendly, 1080i/50 French release). In the meantime, there’s Pathe’s Blu-ray of Gance’s intergenerational saga “Paradise Lost,” which was lensed by cinematographer Christian Matras, whose credits include Max Ophüls’s “La Ronde,” “Le Plaisir,” “The Earrings of Madame de…” and “Lola Montes,” as well as Jean Renoir’s “The Grand Illusion.”
