Today’s quartet of additions to the online store consists of Woody Allen’s “Small Time Crooks,” Nagisa Oshima’s provocatively-covered “Cruel Story of Youth,” “Barton Fink” by Joel and Ethan Coen, and “Madame de…” (often referred to as “The Earrings of Madame de…”) by Max Ophüls. If you’re saying to yourself, “Wait a minute, didn’t Criterion release ‘Madame de…’ on Blu-ray?” you’re right — it did get a domestic release from Criterion… which was pretty heavily criticized. As Blu-ray.com’s review put it, Gaumont’s French release “isn’t flawless, but currently it is clearly the best one on the market.”
