If you were to try and find a theme that unifies the four titles that arrived at 4xblu today, cultural differences would probably be as good a choice as any. On the one hand, there’s Takeshi Kitano’s “Brother,” which finds the Japanese gangster in Los Angeles yet not entirely out of his element. Then there’s King Vidor’s “Man Without a Star,” in which Kirk Douglas’s wandering cowboy finds himself in the middle of a local dispute between small-time ranchers and an ambitious landowner. Lastly, there’s Mike Leigh’s “Secrets & Lies” and “High Hopes,” which explore issues of race, class, politics, economics, and a few other topics that are, ideally, best left undiscussed at the dinner table.
