A pair of Karel Zeman titles came in from the Czech Republic today, as 4xblu received a restock of Zeman’s “Invention for Destruction” and added “The Fabulous Baron Munchausen” to the shop’s inventory. Both discs are sourced from recent restorations by the Karel Zeman Museum in Prague, who produced them in conjunction with The Czech Film Foundation and Czech television.
Basing his films from literary sources like the writings of Jules Verne and Gottfried August Bürger’s tales of the adventures of Baron Munchausen, Zeman developed a unique style that incorporated puppetry, live action, stop motion animation, and a variety of special effects to convey his cinematic fantasies, taking audiences from the bottom of the sea to the moon and all sorts of places in between.
