A staggering sixteen titles arrived at the shop today, including nine requests. Six of them are by director Nobuhiko Obayashi, who is best known in America for “Hausu” aka “House,” the bizarre horror comedy released in the U.S. by The Criterion Collection. Alas, none of these Obayashi discs appears to have English subtitles (something that wasn’t an issue for the customer who requested them). Also coming in today were Stephen Daldry’s “The Hours,” “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” by Taika Waititi (whose “Thor: Ragnarok” is slated for release in 2017), and Klaus Härö’s “The Fencer,” the fourth of the director’s five films to be Finland’s submission for the Best Foreign Film Oscar (and the first of Härö’s pictures to make the nine film shortlist). As for the remaining restocks, the big news is the return of Aki Kaurismäki on Blu-ray from Finland. “The Man Without a Past” and “Drifting Clouds” are the first of what will hopefully be many Kaurismäki films coming to the shelves of 4xblu.
