Today’s additions to Foreign Exchange’s online store are Robert Bresson’s “Mouchette,” Robert Siodmak’s cult classic “Cobra Woman,” and “The Elephant Man,” which was helmed by the cinematic odd couple of producer Mel Brooks and director David Lynch. Although the film was released in the wake of a Tony Award-winning Broadway play based on the same subject, oddly enough the film isn’t an adaptation of that play. The film proved successful in its own right, however, being nominated for eight Academy Awards… although it failed to take home a single Oscar. That said, had the Academy Award for Best Makeup that was created as a response to “The Elephant Man” not being recognized for its achievement in this field existed in 1980, it’s generally accepted that the film would have won that category.
