A quintet of titles came in from the UK today, including a new addition — Satoshi Kon’s “Perfect Blue” — suggested by a pair of the shop’s online buyers. Kon’s tragically slight filmography (he died of cancer at the age of 46) is at the very least a forerunner of, if not an outright influence upon, American filmmakers such as Darren Aronofsky, the Wachowskis, and Christopher Nolan. Joining “Perfect Blue” are restocks of Herbert Ross’s “The Secret of My Success,” “Secrets & Lies” and “High Hopes” by Mike Leigh, and Artificial Eye’s Mizoguchi box set, which contains three films (“Osaka Elegy,” “Sisters of the Gion,” and “Utamaro and his Five Women”) that are only available on Blu-ray in this set (the fourth, “The Story of the Last Chrysanthemums,” has since been restored and will be released domestically by Criterion in a few weeks).
Today’s Arrivals: 8/17/16
